Connect Joomla 4 or 5
API token, required plugins, account level, and a known Joomla 5.4.9 bug.
- In Joomla administrator, System → Plugins: enable “API Authentication - Web Services Joomla Token”, “User - Joomla API Token”, “Web Services - Content” and “Web Services - Tags”.
- Use a Manager, Administrator or Super User account. Joomla's API refuses article writes from front-end groups such as Author. Only Super Users get tokens by default; add other groups under the “User - Joomla API Token” plugin's Allowed User Groups.
- Users → your user → Joomla API Token: copy the token and paste it with your site URL.
Joomla 5.4.9
Joomla 5.4.9 has a bug that makes editing existing articles through its API fail. eWriting.net detects it and shows Update existing posts — Failed verification. Creating and publishing new articles still works. Updating Joomla to a fixed release and re-checking capabilities resolves it.
Other limits
Through Joomla's core API eWriting.net can set the meta description but not an SEO title, canonical URL or images. Every article needs a category — set a default one in the website settings.
